Basic Functionality of Diameter which was not fully specified in RADIUS protocol: -

  1. Failover
  2. Transmission level security
  3. Reliable transport
  4. Agent support
  5. Server-initiated messages
  6. Auditability
  7. Transition support

Considering the current network there is no limitation as such. It is intended to work in both local as well as in Roaming Situations. The base protocol needs to be supported by all DIAMETER implementations.
